R/V Ferrel departed Amelia, La. to collect data in the Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi Canyon from July 3, 2010 to July 6, 2010. The cruise aimed to characterize changes in the chemical and physical properties of surface oil and shallow (<2 m) surface water with increasing distance from the MC252 wellhead, and to characterize the oil degrading bacterial communities associated with surface oil at different stages of oil weathering.
